Abstract

Location applications can be considered promising tools to improve the quality of life for the elderly. They remove architectural barriers, promote independence and social inclusion and increase personal autonomy. This work presents a review of the status of location systems thought the analysis of several research projects, patents and commercial products. The obtained conclusions are completed with the direct opinions of the users in rural area. Data were collected through several workshops with elderly people and caregivers from Teruel (Spain). The results will provide a basis for researchers, developers and manufactures to discover strengths, weakness and needs that should be met at the future in order to improve the location systems for the elderly in rural areas.
