Study of the Reaction of Dissolution of Sphalerite Using the Model of Pitzer-Variation in the Activity Coefficient of Zinc Sulfate

Modeling and Simulation in Engineering, Economics and Management (MS 2012)

Abstract

The present study concerns the dissolution process of sphalerite in synthetic aqueous solution of sulfuric acid in the absence of oxygen, which allows zinc sulfate to be obtained from a sphalerite. The reaction product of the reaction solution in the absence of oxygen is determined using the Pitzer model used to calculate the various activity coefficients. As the leaching experiments of the present study covered the temperature range from 25° C to 200° C, it is necessary to consider the expressions giving the coefficients activity of zinc sulfate and sulfuric acid as a function of temperature.
