Abstract

Nowadays, indexing data by ontological concepts represents a new approach for modeling and exploiting databases. These emergent architectures are called Ontology-Based DataBases (OBDB). In such systems, both the ontology (local ontology) and the related data are subject to the same treatment as queries expression and manipulation. We want to offer users the opportunity to manage this ontology-based data by accessing only the concepts which are relevant in the context of their applications. This paper aims to propose an original yet efficient approach to introduce the view mechanism in OBDBs. To achieve this goal, we propose to add an additional layer, the viewpoint layer. This latter offers multiple and extended descriptions of the local ontology concepts. The view mechanism is then applied to provide customized view ontologies which can easily be exploited and managed by end users.
