Abstract

The issue of export diversification has received considerable attention since 1950s. However, there is very few works referred to the efficient geographical diversity of export trade. This article attempts to fill the gap in the literature. Based on the overview of measures used in empirical literatures, the paper constructs the deviation index to measure the efficient diversity. With the time series data from 1990 to 2011, this article analyzes the structure of China’s export markets. The results show the structure has been optimizing constantly since China introduced the strategy of market diversity in early 1990s. Meanwhile, the deviation index further indicates there is still a huge improvement space for China’s exports to the markets of Europe and Asia.
