Abstract
“痛快”[Tongkuai] is a common word in modern Chinese, which has three meanings:“高兴”[Gaoxing](pleased, very happy, joyful), “尽兴”[Jinxing](happily, to one’s heart’s content ) and “爽快”[Shuangkuai] (straightforward). The morpheme "Tong" comes from the adverb "Tong", while the adverb "Tong" comes from the grammaticalization of the adjective "Tong". The morpheme "Kuai" derives from the adjective "Kuai". Extended relations occur between the different meanings of the adjective "Kuai", such as "glad" and "fast". This article focuses on the grammaticalization of "Tong" and the extended relations of "Kuai". The lexicalization and grammaticalization of "Tongkuai" are also explained in the paper.
