Abstract
The task of debugging Expert Systems is notoriously difficult. The HESDE (Hypertext Expert-System Debugging Environment) provides a flexible way to capture, and allow browsing of, an expert systems execution, trace. HESDE operates in a rule-based environment, hence the objects of interest are the rule, facts and agenda. During a consultation the interaction between these objects is stored and automatically transformed into Hypertext network. After consultation, debugging is facilitated by allowing the user to browse the network.
Experimentation has shown HESDE to be superior to KEE for debugging certain tasks. Future work will allow authoring (dynamic modification of the network during execution) and extension to non-rule based paradigms.
