Abstract
In this paper we present a measurement study on signaling in Gnutella overlay networks. Both signaling load and the scale of variability in the existence of p2p overlay connections are investigated. The purpose of the study is to identify and understand characteristic scales of variability and stability of peer-to-peer overlay networks. The identified, typical scales should ultimately provide a basis for a dynamic management of peer-to-peer services. Unmanaged peer-to-peer service have often enough incubated a prohibitively large signaling traffic load.
