Abstract
As the worldwide Internet continues its dramatic growth in connectivity and use, the underlying infrastructure must keep pace. The new pressures on the infrastructure go well beyond supplying bandwidth. These pressures include a move from simple information publication, to more complex transactions; a dramatic increases in the types of client devices that access the Internet; and every-increasing expectations of reliability and predictability. In our view, this means that the network will move from being thought of as a provider of interconnectivity to a provider of a whole range of rich network services.
