Abstract
Starting from the viewpoint of an applications programmer a model of a general form terminal is developed.
This model is described using the well-known features of a higher level programming language to define data structures. In this way the interface functions for manipulating this Virtual Terminal are partly provided by the usual operations for accessing and updating linked data structures.
The additionally needed interface services — especially for handling communication errors — are described and a general scheme for a presentation layer protocol is developed. Possible extensions of the model are provided for an efficient transformation to existing terminals and transmission procedures.
Finally the relations of this Virtual Terminal to other models and protocols for the presentation layer are discussed.
