Abstract
The goal of the work reported here is to develop a machine-independent methodology tor benchmarking database machines. As an initial step, performance measurement experiments are being conducted on a relational database machine. The experimental environment is described. Results from an application of the methodology are reported. The results not only are indicative of the machine performance, but also characterize the methodology for benchmarking.
