Kurzfassung

Die Entwicklung von Netzwerkanwendungen, d.h. von höheren Kommunikationsprotokollen und komplexen verteilten Anwendungen, erfordert entsprechende Hilfsmittel sowohl für die Softwareentwicklung als auch für die Leistungsbewertung. Das System DESIGN (Distributed Environment for Simulation, Investigation and Generation of Network Applications) integriert beide Bereiche. Es werden die Grundlagen zur Strukturierung von Netzwerkanwendungen und das Konzept für die Produktentwicklung in DESIGN erläutert. Die verschiedenen Laufzeitumgebungen, in denen eine Netzwerkanwendung während der Entwicklung ablaufen kann, werden besprochen. Ein Überblick über die Benutzerschnittstelle und die benötigten Entwicklungswerkzeuge schließt sich an.

Abstract

The development of network applications, e.g. of higher level protocols and complex distributed applications, requires adequate tools for the software production as well as for the performance evaluation. The system DESIGN (Distributed Environment for Simulation, Investigation and Generation of Network Applications) integrates both aspects. The fundamentals for structuring network applications and the concept for the application development with DESIGN are explained. DESIGN offers different run time environments to support different development phases. These runtime environments are discussed. The user interface and the development tools are outlined.
