Summary
The mathematical model of the kidney countercurrent system by Stephenson promoted research for this physiological mechanism. Simulation of transient processes, e.g. water diuresis or partial blockade of active transport rates, requires highest performance on numerical methods. An adaptive collocation-based method of lines shows to work reliable, exact and fast for these problems. Simulation results lead to interesting aspects on the concentrating mechanism. The numerical method is independent of specific models and therefore simply applicable to further extensions.
