Abstract

Optimization of the structural crashworthiness is an essential problem and also a marketing tool in vehicle development. To identify promising design measures and to reduce the experimental effort, numerical simulation techniques are being used. Current finite element codes for simulation crash behaviour are ineffective because they do not possess special features for appropriate modelling the highly non-linear kinematics involved (in the crash process). One of the most serious limitations under inelastic material response is the lack of a method to handle ‘folding mechanisms’.
