Zusammenfassung
Elektronische Mitteilungssysteme (Message Handling Systems) sind in vielfältigen Ausprägungen seit längerer Zeit auf dem Markt, teilweise als eigenständige Systeme, teilweise integriert in automatisierte Büroanwendungen. 1984 hat CCITT, das Beratungskomitee der Fernmeldeverwaltüngen, erstmals eine Serie von Empfehlungen (X.400 ff) verabschiedet, die ein allgemeines Modell eines internationalen Elektronischen Mitteilungsdienstes, eine Definition des Leistungsumfanges und die Festlegung von Message Handling Protokollen enthält /CCI400/. Dieses Modell beruht auf dem OSI Referenzmodell für die Kommunikation Offener Systeme /IS07498/: Es wird festgelegt, wie die Anwendungsschicht des Referenzmodells strukturiert ist.
