Abstract

The focal point of this workshop on natural language generation will be the traditional distinction between What to say and How to say it. Under this perspective we will review and discuss the experiences from recent work in text generation done in the framework of the SEMSYN project.1 We will both illustrate the relative merits of this work and work2 out its current limitations. We will argue that further progress is only to be expected when future research concentrates on questions related to the generation of content. Remarks on other work in nl generation in the final section of the paper shall provide additional material for the discussion at the workshop.
