Transparent Database Access in a Network of Heterogeneous Systems

Part of the book series: Informatik-Fachberichte ((INFORMATIK,volume 205))

Abstract

In a distributed heterogeneous environment, there exists the problem of transparent access to remote resources. A user in the network wants to access a central database system in the same way as if the database would reside on the local system. The Network Operating System provides the basic services and interfaces for the cooperation between clients and servers and for distributed application development. We have designed and implemented Transparent Database Access (TDA) in a network of heterogeneous systems as a distributed application based on the Network Operating System. A user in the network can send requests to the database host and gets back the results into the local environment. TDA is based on the client/server model of cooperation and consists of a server on the database host and a client with end user and application program support, which can run on any system supported by DACNOS.
