Abstract
Object-oriented database management systems are currently proposed for many application areas. Profiles of these areas differ significantly from each other. Up to now, it has not been achieved to build a single statically-configurated DBMS which may be used in any application areas with the desired efficiency. Although many methods of performance control may be found in the literature on database systems, only few of them are used simultaneously in single DBMS implementations. The high effort of manual performance control and a missing or inconsistent knowledge about methods (side-effects, possible interactions between them) are reasons for this situation. In this paper we propose to develop a knowledge-based toolkit for the acquisition and management of information for performance control. A generator of application programs and an expert system have been developed and implemented at FZI. We describe the architecture of our first prototypes and directions for our next steps.
