Abstract
The STRETCH Project aims at integrating database and knowledge base technology. It is intended to design and implement an Extensible Knowledge Base Management System (KBMS) which supports complex applications in defining and manipulating large size knowledge bases. In contrary to most approaches under research the system resulting from STRETCH will support applications which follow different programming paradigms. Persistently stored application objects can be data structures and operations for knowledge representation and management from the object-oriented or the rule-based paradigm. Extensibility will be provided for the traditional data modelling capabilities of the system as well as for the future integration of additional paradigms. Using the STRETCH environment particular applications can be supported by the most appropriate paradigm or by a combination.
