Abstract
After a general discussion of the FORWARD PROBLEM (=modelling) and the INVERSE PROBLEM (=migration) in two dimensions, based on the homogeneous acoustic wave equation, a data example is presented.
The data-set was established by acoustic forward modelling, where the underlying model was hidden on purpose. The problem was solved in two steps:
-
a)
The conventional processing stream was used up to poststack time migration.
-
b)
The macro-model was established and finally prestack shotgather based-depth migration was applied. The result is compared to the true solution, and demonstrates the advantages of the proposed velocity checking procedure in terms of macro model verification over the so-called focussing approaches.
An additional advantage of the depth migration method being used becomes apparent as well: only a fraction of the existing data set needs to be depth-migrated in order to obtain a proper image. This fact is demonstrated with the given data example as well.
