Zusammenfassung
Landschaftsdaten werden in vielen Bereichen der Vermessung, der Raum- und Versorgungsplanung und des Umweltschutzes benötigt. Auf Rechnern betriebene Geo-Informations-Systeme (GIS) sollen die Erfassung, Verwaltung, Aufbereitung und Verarbeitung von Landschaftsdaten in diesen Anwendungsbereichen unterstützen. Allzu oft werden Rechner aber lediglich zur Datenspeicherung und zum Zeichnen eingesetzt; von den Anwendern dringend gewünschte, mächtige Operationen werden von GIS oft noch nicht angeboten. So werden beispielsweise Landschaftsdaten meist durch manuelle Digitalisierung gezeichneter (also analoger) Landkarten mittels Digitalisiertablett erfaßt. Die Datenverwaltung erfolgt entweder über GIS-eigene Dateistrukturen oder über kommerziell erhältliche Datenbanksysteme. Damit verfügen GIS in der Regel entweder nicht über Datenbankmechanismen im vollen Umfang, wie etwa Recovery oder Synchronisation von Transaktionen, oder der räumlich orientierte Zugriff auf die Daten wird nicht genügend effizient unterstützt.
