Abstract

In this paper a concept for the highly interactive creation and reading of multi media documents will be described. The concept is based on the existence of a central carrier integrating single media sheets into one document. The power of the editor comes from a limited but dedicated functionality, not from a wide range of sophisticated, but most often not needed, functionality (like with desk top publishing systems). This intentionally restricted functionality makes the editor and the produced documents easy to understand and to use for everybody. This makes the editor an innovative product within the multi media world of our daily life. To stress this fact the editor is open to be integrated into office environments. One of the main result is that faxes, voice messages, scanned images, recorded phone conversations, e-mail, etc. are visualized and modified by the editor in exactly the same way as documents created by the editor itself.

The paper describes the design principles and the user interface of the first fully implemented prototype of the editor named multi media jotter. Additionally its daily usage is demonstrated. This paper does not elaborate in detail on the jotter’s implementation in an object oriented prototyping environment. The jotter was developed as a substantial part of the PICA project (a Personal Information and Communication Appliance) of the Philips Innovation Centre Aachen.
