Abstract
In a system for processing spoken language the domain of prosody plays an important role. The structure of spoken utterances is determined to a large extent by melodic or rhythmic temporal factors. One of the most important factors is lexical stress, for which there is as yet no satisfactory descriptive lexical representation technique. This contribution deals with regular, subregular and irregular information about lexical stress which is shown in a range of characteristic examples, and a new system for describing prosodie knowledge in the lexicon, based on default-inheritance, is proposed.
