Perhaps the most important trend in modern operating systems research is the trend towards global environments like distributed systems and client/server architectures. Driven by a foreseeable significant increase of remote services (cable and wireless) in the near future, client/server environments will progressively replace traditional operating systems that operate a single computer or workstation in isolation.
