Abstract
Standards and standardization are frequently regarded as matters of interest for trade and commerce. This is certainly true; however, recent standardization in the field of real-time systems for industrial automation shows clearly that standardization is increasingly influencing the technical development of areas under standardization. Therefore it is important for scientists and developers of such systems to know about the impact of standards and about the procedures towards the establishment of standards.
