Abstract

In a retrospective study all drug prescriptions in a primary health care centre during a four year period were analyzed concerning potential drug interactions. The analysis was done using a query language on an automated medical record database. The study shows that 1.9% of all drug prescriptions result in a potential drug interaction. Based on the results of the study a decision support system for drug prescription in primary care has been developed. The system is data driven and integrated with the automated medical record. A knowledge base, comprising clinically relevant drug-interactions, is the core of the decision support system. The factual medical knowledge is represented as a semantic net, and the critiquing knowledge in a standard frame-like representation.
