Abstract

The value of computerized data storage in clinical medicine is well recognized. Such a tool enables rapid, comprehensive, and efficient data retrieval. Yet to be recognized for their full potential in this field are decision support systems. Moreover, the integration of database systems with decision support systems offers great potential. At our clinic, a modified computerized medical record system (MS-COSTAR) for research in multiple sclerosis (MS) has been in place for a number of years. We are not only working to maintain and improve the storage of clinical information but we are also focusing on developing decision support systems to work directly with the data in the system. Reliable measurement of disability has been our focus up until now. This is valuable for many studies dealing with the descriptive epidemiology of MS and it is vital for any drug efficacy trials that are undertaken. Other systems such as one for diagnostic support are being developed. Since many centres in the world are adopting the same information system, any decision support system that works with this system can easily be implemented in multiple sites. This allows for improved data pooling, a useful tool for disease etiology studies and multicentre drug efficacy trials.
