Internet as a Challenge to Fuzzy Querying

Part of the book series: Studies in Fuzziness and Soft Computing ((STUDFUZZ,volume 111))

Abstract

We advocate the use of fuzzy querying in particular in the Internet — related environment in which, on the one hand, most of the users are not computer specialists and hence simple tools and natural language interfaces and elements are to be employed in the formulation of (imprecisely specified) database queries. On the other hand, fuzzy querying should be used in widely distributed data sources (databases) available through the Internet. We show how elements of fuzzy logic, notably fuzzy terms, linguistic quantifiers and modifiers, can be employed to attain human consistent and useful solutions. Specifically, we present an approach to fuzzy querying implemented as our FQUERY for Access system, and then extended to make fuzzy querying possible via a WWW browser.
