Abstract

Now the first e-passports issued by several countries are in the field, and the first real life experiences with them have been made. Will they be readable at all borders? Will the data stored on the chips be accessible, and can they be used to verify successfully the identity of the person carrying the document? These interoperability questions have several aspects that have to be discussed: Passport compliance, reader compliance, biometric data compliance, and biometric system performance. A status on standardization initiatives as well as on first experiences in e-border projects completes this paper.
