Abstract
Digital Game-based Learning (DGBL) is a current topic in the academic as well as practical discourse on learning in the context of 21st century learning/skills as well as digitization. This paper focuses on the question of what DGBL is and what it is not—as well as what it could be. It explores the relation of DGBL to paradigms of learning and schools of German didactics. It presents examples of different scenarios and approaches that all fit under the umbrella of DGBL, but do not match paradigms of learning and models of didactics equally well. It thus poses the question with which theoretical and normative frame DGBL will advance the digitization of learning culture(s).
