Summary
It will be shown that the problem of optimum stratification and allocation for one and several variates can be reduced to a nonlinear program with a nonlinear objective function and in general nonlinear restrictions. Methods for solving these problems are given for discrete and continuous variates with a) vanishing, b) non-vanishing sampling fraction. Results are tabulated for the normal and the lognormal distribution. It will be shown that the well-known formula ofDalenius may lead to wrong results, because one of the (non-linear) restrictions may be not satisfied. The problem and the methods for solving this problem can be generalized. This will be shown with the two-dimensional normal distribution.
