Abstract

Personal Communication Networks (PCNs) aim to establish a mass market for mobile communications and provide a competitive alternative to the wired PSTN. This paper explains how the DCS 1800 cellular network standard was developed to provide an appropriate technical basis for the implementation of PCN services. Particular attention was given to RF parameters, small cell radio networks, standardized network interfaces, and enhancement of coverage areas by infrastructure sharing between operators.
