Implementing Brown's method for systems of nonlinear equations with dense banded Jacobian

Abstract

We show that Brown's method can be implemented in a manner that is particularly efficient if one wants to solve a system of nonlinear equations with dense banded Jacobian. The arithmetic work required for one iteration step is then essentially the same as the arithmetic work required to solve a dense banded linear system by Gaussian elimination.

Zusammenfassung

Wir zeigen, daß das Brown-Verfahren in einer Weise implementiert werden kann, die besonders effizient ist, wenn man ein nichtlineares Gleichungssystem zu lösen hat, dessen Jacobi-Matrix voll besetzte Bandstruktur aufweist. Der arithmetische Aufwand für einen Iterationsschritt ist dann im wesentlichen so groß wie der Aufwand beim Gaußalgorithmus zur Lösung linearer Gleichungssysteme mit voll besetzter Bandmatrix.
