On the scaled newton method for the symmetric eigenvalue problem

Zur skalierten Newtonschen Methode für das symmetrische Eigenwertproblem

Abstract

For solving symmetric eigenvalue problems the scaled Newton method is proposed. The new algorithm is equivalent to the Rayleigh quotient iteration and its rate of convergence is cubic. Numerical experiments indicate that the scaled Newton method is very competitive with the projected Newton method, and produces, in the main, insignificantly smaller residua than the Rayleigh quotient iteration.

Zusammenfassung

Zur Lösung des symmetrischen Eigenwertproblems wird die skalierte Newtonsche Methode vorgeschlagen. Der neue Algorithmus ist zur Rayleigh-Quotienten-Iteration äquivalent und deswegen ist die Kovergenz dieser Methode kubisch. Numerische Experimente zeigen, daß die skalierte Newtonsche Methode der Projektionsmethode von Newton überlegen ist und im allgemeinen etwas geringere Residua produziert als die Rayleigh-Quotienten-Iteration.
