New trends in e-business: From B2B to Web Services

Abstract

Today the terme-business is often used for describing attempts of using Internet for improving business efficiencies and introducing innovative new business models. Until recently, the major focus of e-business has been around replacing the traditional communication means such as telephone and fax by Internet-based electronic data interchange. The introduction of new standards such as XML (Extensible Markup Language), SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol), and UDDI (Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration) opened new opportunities for dynamically integrating business processes across corporate boundaries on demand. This architecture is calledWeb Services, and being pursued by major software vendors such as IBM and Microsoft. Web Services can also be considered as a new component-based, distributed computing architecture. This paper discusses the background of this new trend and explains the individual technologies including XML, SOAP, and UDDI that comprise the basis of Web Services.

Hiroshi Maruyama, Dr. Eng.: He is the manager of Internet Technology Group, Tokyo Research Laboratory, IBM Japan. He received his B.S. and M.S. from Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1981 and 1983, respectively. He received his Dr. Eng. from Kyoto University in 1995. He joined IBM Research in 1983 and worked on artificial intelligence, logic programming, and natural processing. From 1996 to 1997, he was assigned to IBM Corp.’s Internet Division in New York where he coordinated the architectures of Internet-related products. After returning to Japan, he served as a visiting associate professor at Computer Science Department, Tokyo Institute of Technology, working on Internet security technologies. He is managing a group of 24 researchers working on XML, security, knowledge management, and distributed programming.
