Abstract
Process design is a complex and ill-defined activity whose structure has largely been unexplored. An information processing analysis of process design suggests two distinct problem spaces called Design Conception and Design Refinement. Within each, several generically defined design tasks that transform design inputs into desired products can be identified. Integration of the tasks gives rise to a supervisory framework that has the necessary functionality for carrying out the information processing in process design. The framework has been illustrated in the paper using an industrial standard design problem for producing ethanol using molasses and bio-reactions. Using the framework as a basis, an architecture for a design expert system is developed.
