Abstract

A new teaching-orientated multimedia information system which utilizes advanced technology has gone into application in three different subject areas and universities. The basic system was developed as STUDIENMODELL PHYSIOLOGIE in the Department of Physiology, University of Essen (Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Wiemer), primarily for applications in physiology, but also for transferability to other fields. In 1989 the project was expanded into a cooperation with the Department of Economics, Fachhochschule Dortmund, FRG (Prof. Dr. Uwe Großmann) and the Department of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton, UK (Univ. Lect. Dr. Wendy Hall) for further development of the system — now called MILES = MULTIMEDIALES INFORMATIONS- UND LEHRSYSTEM — into a general tool for integration of computer and audiovisual technologies into higher and professional education.
