On the scalability of the demand-priority LAN a performance comparison to FDDI for multimedia scenarios

Abstract

In this paper, we study the performance of the demand-priority LAN and compare it to the performance of FDDI. For different load models — one of them based on MPEG traffic — the demand-priority LAN is shown to come short of what it promises to be. In particular, it suffers from bad efficiency in case of large networks and small high priority frames. Most of our simulations address the effects that high priority traffic has on normal priority transmission. However, we also comment on the effectiveness of the high priority service. In some cases the network changes to a single priority operation where delays can no longer be bounded and where frame losses can no longer be avoided even for high priority traffic.
