Abstract

In this paper we are concerned with the problem of the representation of statistical-scientific data in the field of geographical information systems. Our approach allows the modeling of both the descriptive and the spatial-geometric aspects of information. This ensures: (1) an easier formulation of statistical queries cointaining references to geographical attributes of data, (2) a way for an easy linking between statistical data and their geographical reference. We discuss the problem of modeling geographical data from a conceptual point of view: in this framework we show that it is possible to consider only the topological aspect of geographical information. We show that this allows to deal in a natural way with queries involving metrics via a suitable reduction to topological queries.
