Abstract

This paper presents a new approach dealing with navigation inside anatomical structures. Departing from conventional fly through approaches which require a preprocessing of volume data or an interactive control of the virtual sensor exploring the volume, the proposed method combines the on-line computation of the scene view and its analysis to automatically define the 3-D sensor path. The navigation environment and the camera-like model are sketched in the first section. The basic stages of the active navigation scheme are then described: (i) the virtual image computation (based on ray casting); (ii) the image analysis (using depth maps and surface normal vector fields); (iii) the path estimation. Preliminary results are finally reported using standard MRI and MRA data sets. They are discussed and some immediate perspectives are given in the last section.
