Abstract
The analysis of the behaviour of elasto-plastic solids is an important and computationally very intensive area of research in civil engineering. For ‘large’ meshes, typically with 100000+ degrees of freedom, the conventional finite element approach, which involves the assembly of global matrices and the use of direct equation solvers is no longer viable, so there has been intense study of alternative, iterative techniques. In this paper we present the results from an extension of an element-based iterative approach, for use on parallel systems. We show that very good performance can be obtained with a simple linear problem, and believe that this will extend to more complex non-linear problems.
