Abstract

Within the scope of a Swiss national research project, the load carrying behaviour of one hundred Swiss spruce columns was examined. The columns were chosen randomly from different regions of Switzerland and tested under combined axial and lateral loading.

The columns were modelled individually in a geometrically and physically nonlinear finite element analysis using the statistical data. In order to reduce the computational effort required by the complex finite element model, a probabilistic approach by means of the Point-Estimate-Method was chosen. By only a few computations this method permitted the determination of the normal distribution of the load capacity. The method considered the effect of scattering and correlation of the input data.
