Abstract
Ariadne is a tool for interactive production and distribution of specialized information on computer science on the World-Wide Web. The key element of the Ariadne concept is the interaction between user and system. While most WWW information services can only be used passively, Ariadne enables users to decide on the contents and quality of the system and to obtain network-based, distributed scientific information on computer science.
The Ariadne concept is based on a combination of navigation and search methods for information retrieval, and on the users' contributions for information storage. Users have two options for maintaining their standards for the quality of the service: by entering information in the Ariadne database and by checking the quality of the information stored in it. Indexing and classification of the entries are used to ensure that Ariadne provides a red thread through the labyrinth of computer science information in the WWW.
Users have easy access to this information by combining navigation and search in given, but freely selectable parts of the Web. About changes of the information users can be informed by setting up profiles.
