Flexible multiplexing in MPEG-4 systems

Abstract

System design for terminals communicating audiovisual information becomes more and more complex. MPEG-4 Systems is the part of the upcoming standard that cares exactly about this issue. Because MPEG-4 addresses many applications at once, it has to be understood as a tool box, where application developers can choose appropriate tools to support their development efforts. In particular, the multiplexing tool of MPEG-4 Systems has the difficult task, to apply scheduling and dropping algorithms to multimedia data streams in order to optimize the end-to-end quality of the whole application. Therefore, it has to take into account bitstream characteristics and parameters set by the author of the multimedia content as well as information from the underlying network. To ensure the interoperability of MPEG-4 terminals and to hide network specific details from the MPEG-4 application developer, MPEG has defined the Delivery Multimedia Integration Framework (DMIF). This paper gives a short introduction into MPEG-4 Systems and DMIF. Moreover, we present our prototype realization of a DMIF layer, including FlexMux control, by means of OMT diagrams and block diagrams.
