Abstract

In the Office Automation area, application environments and database technology evolve toward highly structured and object-oriented system models. Unfortunately a large quantity of valuable data is stored into old-fashioned online information services, in the form of poorly structured documents. The big difference in the data models and the diversity in the user interfaces, make it extremely difficult to integrate these data into modern application contexts. This paper presents a practical solution to this problem, based on an object-oriented approach studied in the frame of the ESPRIT Project 2109 TOOTSI. The approach is based on the definition of a uniform set of abstract operations, a common query language and a DDL for defining complex objects. Though targeted to online service integration, the approach presented here can be easily generalised to other cases.
