Abstract
In the area of ’Human Computer Cooperative Work’ research is done to solve problems arising when humans and computers cooperate with each other in any combination. This paper emphasizes the aspect of cooperation between humans and computers. For novice and inexperienced users complex operating systems are still rather difficult to handle. Frequently, the knowledge about the structure and the functions of an operating system necessary to perform a particular task is not adequate to the intended task. The intelligent operating system interface IFOS cooperates with the user in order to compensate for his lack of knowledge. IFOS supports the user in formulating his tasks, and developing plans to perform these tasks, as well as it, on behalf, executes the chosen plans and monitors their execution. The paper discusses the concepts of a first IFOS kernel, which has been implemented as a user interface to a UNIX workstation.
