Abstract

This paper describes a general methodology for specifying clinical practice guidelines, which can be exploited in a WWW environment. The formal representation aims at producing clinical guidelines which 1) can be widely shared between different institutions, 2) can be efficiently shared between human and software agents cooperating inside a clinical context, and 3) are able to deal with patient and organization preferences. Such a formal representation, presenting an expressive syntax and an application-oriented semantics, could facilitate development, implementation and real-time access to the guideline's prescriptions. Moreover, this kind of representation could be crucial for activities such as guideline's validation and modification.
