Abstract
This paper describes an integrated system that enables designers to work with the virtual model of the steel structural frame. It provides methods for modelling the connections therefore ensuring fidelity with the expected behaviour of the frame in practice. The behaviour of the joints is based on the strength, stiffness and ductility of connections rather than simply assumed to be ‘pinned’ or‘rigid’. The paper outlines a research programme that has the above as one of its objectives and gives an example of its application.
