For ten years the publication ‘Dialoger’ has been discussing skills and technology in the perspective of tacit knowledge. Two examples are to be found in number 36/96, “Work and Skills” and number 44/97 “The World of Work Knowledge”. The Dialogue Seminar at Stockholm’s Royal Dramatic Theatre, a programme run in co-operation with the Royal Institute of Technology, also produces books that relate to the theme of this essay. Some examples of the books used are: “The Honour of Work” by Thomas Tempte (1997), “The Epistemology of Work” by Bengt Molander (1997), “The Nigger of the Narcissus” by Joseph Conrad (1997) and a new edition of Hans Larsson’s “Intuition” from 1892. Mention should also be made of the new edition of Harry Martinson’s, “Vägen till Klockrike”, (The Path) Bonniers 1998
Doctoral dissertations that have influence the contents of this chapter are Bo Göranzon, “The Practical Intellect”, Springer-Verlag (1992); Maja-Lisa Perby, “Konsten att bemästra en process. Om att förvalta yrkeskunnande” (The Aunt of Mastering the Process. On managing skills) Gidlunds förlag 1995; Terje Sörensen, “Erfaring som tyst kunskap” (Experience As Tacit Knowledge), NTNU, Trondheim, 1996
The following texts on the theory of knowledge and the history of ideas have provided inspiration for this essay: Herbert Joseph’s, “Diderot’s Dialogue”, Carlssons, 1993; Allan Janik, “Cordelia’s Silence”, Carlssons 1991; Michel de Montaigne, “Essays, books 1–3”, Atlantis, 1986
This new edition of “Risks in Technical Systems” also includes examples of extract from texts inspired by the earlier version of the essay, “Tacit Knowledge and Risks”, see below
