Additional information

This article is based on a talk given in honour of Maurice Salles at the University of Caen on 10th June 2009. Among other subjects, the essay discusses the relevance of social choice theory for political philosophy in general and for the theory of justice in particular—a subject in which Salles has had a long-standing interest and involvement. My book, The Idea of Justice (London: Penguin, and Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 2009), which was published a few months after the Caen lecture was delivered, pursues those connections more fully. I take this opportunity of recording my debt to Maurice Salles for his constructive influence on my thinking on justice as well as social choice.
