Abstract
This paper deals with the optimization-based compensation of shape defects of the contour of heavy plates in the hot rolling process. In the first part, a method to estimate the contour and the movement of a plate during the roll pass is presented. Furthermore, a mathematical model of the contour evolution is discussed. Both approaches are validated using measurements of a heavy plate mill. The contour estimation and the model of the contour evolution are used in an optimization-based approach to curb occurring contour errors. Moreover, simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method works effectively.
